#PrepWithPurpose -- Day Seventeen: My Best Friends Dad (Gene)

For backstory on what #PrepWithPurpose is all about please read the blog entry and/or Instagram Post.

Hey Guys,

Yesterday we saw more record breaking temps in Vegas ... it was 115 ... which is 15 degrees ABOVE average! To say it was HOT is an understatement! Call me crazy, but I went ahead and attempted my Monday Sprint Day! It felt like the sun was literally inches from me and a blow torch was blowing it's heat on my skin....IT SUCKED! At least there is no humidity so breathing wasn't very difficult .. but I'm not gonna lie .. at times I thought I may legit pass out, ha! Good thing I'm not some master sprinter and probably don't push myself or go as fast as I should/could .. or I may have! But I got it done and my cardio only day was finished! Little Tripp's face kept flashing in my mind as I ran. I thought about how he would love to run and how his family would love to see him run :(  Thank you Tripp for giving me my motivation yesterday! I hope you felt all the positive energy!

Today's PREP WITH PURPOSE is very personal to me. Not because I know this man personally .. I don't. I've never met him. It's important to me because he is the dad of my best friend.

Sully is really more than my best friend .. he's like the brother I never had. Our relationship is much more brother/sister than best friend. We have very few things in common, disagree on many issues, have had big ole drawn out fights, etc., but we always have fun together, enjoy each others company, love each other and have a deep connection I can't put into words. He was even the "Man of Honor" at my wedding :) So when he (or someone he loves) hurts ... I hurt with them.

When I hit the gym tonight I will be sending good vibes, prayers and blessings to his dad Gene. But not only his dad .. I'll be lifting up Sully as well. Sully loves deep. He is the most selfless person that I know and has been doing everything in his power to help his dad physically, emotionally and financially ... I know this illness is weighing heavy on him as well.

Prep With Purpose -- Day Seventeen: Gene Sullivan

Photo collage of Sully with his dad.
Gene was very recently diagnosed with a rare type of lung cancer that's believed to be traced to his contact with Agent Orange while serving in active duty in the Vietnam War. Faced with the choice of radiation, which would further damage his lung, Gene opted to treat it solely with Chemotherapy.

Physically he is making slow progress. He is even "working out" every day in physical therapy!! He has had 2 chemo treatments and is due for 2 more next month. So far the treatments have been painless and NOT made him sick!! Gene is in a rehabilitation home and will be moving into assisted living at the end of the week.

Because healthcare insurance for veterans is unfortunately not the best sometimes, his family is having to come up with a lot of money out of their pockets to help provide the care that he needs. Double the stress for everyone :(

With every rep ... I will push harder and harder in honor of Gene. Since he is a veteran, I will also do this lift in honor of ALL of the brave men and women who persevere, make sacrifices, and push themselves for our freedom every day and ask - and often receive - nothing in return. If they can fight to keep our country safe, then we can push our bodies to the limit in honor of them. Not to mention, if Gene can workout while going through this horrible process ... we really have NO excuses!!

Gene .. Sully .. today is for YOU!! I love you and hope you can feel all the good vibes and prayers coming your way! You can do this!

XoXo
Stacy

I hope you are joining me on this prayer journey as I prep for #TeamU on July 1st & 2nd! If you are please post/share and use the hashtag #PrepWithPurpose! Let's get a huge prayer chain going and in the process maybe make the sport of bodybuilding less about "me, me, me" and a little more about helping others! Our motivation doesn't have to come from ONLY ourselves!

If you know anyone that needs urgent or ongoing prayer for any physical reason please email me all the information and a picture (or a few) to simplystacyfitness@yahoo.com.
